Professor Bhavani Shankar

Bhavani Shankar is Professorial Research Fellow in Food and Health at the University of Sheffield, where he co-leads the Food Consumption, Health and Sustainability research pillar. He has held past appointments at the University of Reading and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He is an applied economist working on research areas at the intersection of agriculture, food, nutrition and health, in high as well as low/middle income settings. His research interests include the analysis of economic drivers of over- and undernutrition, inequity in food systems and their implications for health, sustainable diets, food and nutrition policy evaluation and the role of agriculture and food systems in enabling better nutrition. Apart from SHEFS, his ongoing externally funded research projects include the Gates-funded Market Interventions for Nutritional Improvement project, the UKRI GCRF Action Against Stunting Hub, and the UK-Aid funded Innovative Methods and Metrics for Agriculture and Nutrition Actions. Shankar has served as managing editor of Food Policy, is currently an academic editor for PLOS One, and is on the editorial advisory board of several other journals.
