Following a BSc in Agriculture at the University of Fort Hare (majoring in Livestock and Pasture and with a final-year project on forage sorghum), Ndabankulu Khululwa Pheliwe joined the Sustainable and Health Food Systems programme in 2019 as a research assistant and is now a Master’s student in Botany at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Her research looks at the effects of drought coupled with nutrient deficiency on the growth carbon costs and nitrogen fixation in crop legume plants during multiple symbioses in the KwaZulu-Natal grassland biome. The research focuses on aspects of diet, environment and livestock, which will in turn generate useful information in selecting legume species with potential functional food production.
